Winter Carnival Celebrates Culture and Community at Belmont Centre
Students at the 内射大奶’s Belmont Centre have been expanding their language skills and cultural awareness through the centre’s annual Winter Carnival festivities.
The carnival blends classic seasonal activities, like snow sculpting and snowshoeing, with meaningful opportunities for students to learn about their community and each other’s culture.
As part of the festivities, students participated in an ‘Amazing Race’ event where higher-level language students presented information, food and facts about their home countries for their peers in the lower-level language classes. Students from the 内射大奶’s Tourism, Travel and Events Management program were also invited to take part. Participants completed a challenge at each station to earn a stamp on their event “passport” and win prizes donated by Island businesses.
In addition to being an exceptional display of cultural diversity, the event introduces newcomers to many Island organizations and services. Representatives from the Workers Compensation Board, Public Health Dental, IRSA and Charlottetown Fire Dept. were among the organizations with informative displays and challenges for participants.
Linc language instructor, Beverley Fullerton Lewis has been coordinating Winter Carnival events for her students for over a decade.
“Our language students really light up when they talk about home. Through our winter carnival events, we’re able to give students room to practice their language skills while also creating a space to celebrate and showcase their culture and traditions,” says Beverley.
The event would not be possible without the generosity of many Island businesses and organizations that set up booths or contributed prizes for the event.
“We’ve had incredible support from the community over the years from partners who see the value in connecting with our students through this event. I’m grateful to all the businesses and organizations that have helped us to deliver an event which has become an annual highlight.”
The winter carnival concluded with a 'Linc's Got Talent' showcase in the Florence Simmons Performance Hall, where students performed in both individual and team categories.
