Polar Code - 2025/2026
Polar Code training courses allow navigation officers to serve onboard ships operating in Polar Waters (North of 60N). The courses aim to provide awareness of hazards present in polar waters to improve seafarers’ ability to contribute to the ship’s safe operations in an extremely cold climate. Understanding legislative requirements in polar waters, ship handling in ice-covered seas, safe working practices at freezing temperatures and pollution prevention requirements specific to those waters are the main subjects of the courses.
BASIC POLAR CODE - $2,100
Prerequisite:
- hold a certificate as Master, chief mate or officer in charge of a navigation watch in accordance with regulations II/1, II/2 and II/3 of the STCW Convention, respectively.
 
ADVANCED POLAR CODE - $2,100
Prerequisites:
- hold a certificate as Master, chief mate or officer in charge of a navigation watch qualified in accordance with regulations II/1, II/2 and II/3 of the STCW Convention, respectively; and,
- either have met the requirements for basic training for ships in polar waters in accordance with STCW Regulation V/5 paragraph 6 or hold a certificate in basic training for ships in polar waters; and,
- have at least two (2) months of approved seagoing service in the deck department at management level, or while performing watchkeeping duties at operational level, within Polar Waters or within acceptable/equivalent ice conditions.
